Lithops - Bum Plants

You will receive your lithops in our navy blue glazed pot or Ashawali spot. 

Nicknamed 'Pebble Plant', 'Living stone' or 'Bum Plant', this odd-looking guy is a slow-growing addition to your cactus collection. Originating from Africa's southern reaches, he's learned to thrive in his rocky neighbourhood by adopting similar stone textures and colours while keeping the majority of his body underground to avoid dehydration.

While his name is unusual, it lends itself to the ancient Greek words for 'stone' and 'face' that refers to the flat face-like tops when looking at them from above. Each individual Pebble Plant will even produce its very own daisy-like flower in the spring or summer once maturity is reached within three years, so what's not to love about them?!

Water

He is a desert-dweller so your new stumpy friend is happy being kept on the drier side of life. Ensure his leaves begin to shrivel slightly before drenching him over the sink to ensure thorough hydration again. Remember to reduce the frequency of waters slightly over the autumn and winter to replicate his dormancy period. Over-watering is a common issue among indoor gardeners, so always be cautious of watering his soil too often! 

Location

Although he rivets for a bright location with partial sun, make sure to cap this to only three hours per day. Keep him on the right-hand side of an east or south-facing window, or within a semi-shaded conservatory for equal, quality growth.

Additional Food

Because of his incredible ability to hold moisture and nutrients in his body for long periods, it's better to under-feed him rather than drench him in Cactus food all the time. We recommend fertilising his soil once every two months with a 'Cactus' labelled feed, mixing a few drops in with his next drink of water.
